Getting There

By Car

The Alvord Desert is located in southeastern Oregon, about 6 hours from Portland and 4 hours from Boise. The last stretch of the journey takes you through stunning high desert landscapes.

We recommend a vehicle with good clearance, though 4WD is not strictly necessary in dry conditions. The roads leading to the playa are well-maintained gravel.

From Portland, OR

Approximately 6 hours driving

• Take I-84 East toward The Dalles
• Continue on US-26 East through Prineville
• Head south on US-20 to Burns
• Take OR-78 East, then OR-205 South to Fields
• The Alvord Desert is just east of Fields

From Boise, ID

• Take I-84 West to Ontario
• Head south on US-95 through Jordan Valley
• Continue west on OR-78 to Burns Junction
• Follow signs toward Fields and Alvord Desert

Cell phone service is extremely limited in this area. We recommend downloading offline maps before your trip. The nearest gas stations are in Fields (limited hours) and Burns (full service).

Please ensure your vehicle is in good condition and bring extra water, snacks, and a spare tire. The desert is remote but incredibly rewarding to reach.
